Sr. Mercedes was the second youngest of six daughters, all of whom became Benedictine Sisters at St. Walburg Monastery. The Wolkings were members of St. Benedict Parish until Mr. and Mrs. Wolking moved to Madonna Manor in the 60s.
For twenty-nine years–1947 through 1976–Sr. Mercedes taught in various schools throughout the diocese of Covington, serving at intervals in various capacities at Madonna Manor. Since 1982 she was moderator of the Benedictine Guild and valued friend to all its members.
She served as ‘postal clerk’ for mail coming through St. Walburg Monastery. She took her turn directing incoming phone calls and greeting guests at the door.
Sister Mercedes and her five “sister-sisters” gathered frequently on Sunday afternoons and on birthdays and special feast days. A faithful family, the six moved their gatherings into the infirmary as Sr. Mercedes’ health worsened. She died after a brief stay at St. Elizabeth Hospice Unit.
