Throughout my 27 years in community I have prayed and contemplated what it means to trust God. I’ve prayed the word trust as a question in moments of uncertainty or sometimes incredulous disbelief when my prayer includes the phrase “really God?”. Some days, I’m living into my ability to trust, repeating “trust” to myself almost as a reminder until it becomes a way of being. Other days unfold in the haze of a quiet trust grounded in God, my heart filled with a sense of peace amidst the daily. I have rarer days (perhaps more moments than days) of exuberant trust. In those moments my heart is overflowing, as St. Benedict describes, with the inexpressible delight of God’s love. These moments leave a mark, and provide a beacon when the questions return.
Trust, for me, is a multifaceted experience…each facet essential to my journey of faith. Whether I trust? trust. or trust! God is there, wise people are there and grace is there in the unfolding of God’s plan. May I, may we, live with an openness that allows us to grow in trust and expands our hearts with the inexpressible delight of God’s love.
