“How Do We Measure Up?” by Sr. Nancy Kordenbrock

I recently attended the funeral of a dear friend and fellow retired teacher. She was a woman of great faith and a positive influence on everyone she met. Her generosity was unequaled.

The gospel chosen for the Mass was from Matthew 5:13-16: You are the salt of the earth…you are the light of the world. Let your light shine…

Nothing could have described her better. She was deeply rooted in her faith and her belief that she could be salt of the earth and light of the world. Her students and fellow teachers, her friends and fellow believers experienced this every day. She was a great teacher but also an even greater caring and loving woman.

It is often said, “students may not remember what you taught them, but they always remember how you treated them.” Being a light, being salt of the earth; that’s how it’s done.

How do I measure up when being judged by these standards? How do we all?
