Sr. Veronica Weibel was born June 18, 1906, in Leipferdingen, Baden, Germany, to Anton and Albertina Elsaesser Weibel and given the name of Theresa at her baptism.
Having come to the United States in 1925, Theresa entered the Benedictine community at St. Walburg Monastery on August 14, 1926, where her sister, Sr. Anselma, had previously entered. Sr. Veronica made religious profession on August 24, 1928, and celebrated Silver Jubilee in July 1953, Golden in July 1978, and Diamond in June 1988.
Sr. Veronica, a grand cook and baker, was missioned at Villa Madonna College on Twelfth Street for 39 years, serving sisters, students, and faculty, the Benedictine priests of the priory at St. Joseph, and the many, many poor men who knocked at her door. In 1968, when the college changed location, Sr. Veronica assisted with cooking and baking at the monastery and continued in this capacity until she was no longer able.
Although it was difficult for her to get around these last years, Sr. Veronica was constant in her community presence. Her childlike simplicity, fidelity to prayer, and gentle disposition endeared her to God and her community. She died peacefully on Wednesday evening, March 9, 1994.
Sr. Veronica’s brothers and sisters preceded her in death, but she is survived by many devoted nieces and nephews.
