Sr. Mary Lawrence’s baptismal name was Anna Lucille and she was the fourth of ten children. She met the Benedictine Sisters as a student at Villa Madonna Academy. Before coming to St. Walburg Monastery in 1933, she studied nursing for over a year at St. Anthony Hospital in Louisville, Kentucky.
Sr. Mary Lawrence taught for 49 years from 1934 to 1985 in schools staffed by the Benedictine Sisters in Northern Kentucky, Danville and Falmouth. She often served as principal and local superior and was a much loved teacher.
Kindness and generosity were part of Sr. Mary Lawrence’s life even though her later years when her life was filled with pain from debilitating arthritis. She would get discouraged as she was unable to do for herself and unable to visit her family. Yet, in her face framed by her beautiful white and rosy cheeks her sense of humor and lightness of spirit shone forth.
