Sr. Placida Hitzler 1991

Sr. Placida Hitzler 1991

Sr. Placida Hitzler, OSB was born November 18, 1893, in Cincinnati, Ohio to Francis and Mary Louise Ledogar Hitzler and give the name Cecilia Katherine at her baptism.

She entered the Benedictine community at St. Walburg Monastery on February 2, 1921, and made religious profession on August 28, 1923. Sister Placida celebrated her silver jubilee in 1948; her golden in 1973; her diamond in 1983.

Sr. Placida served the church and her community primarily as an elementary school teacher of grades one through four at the following:

St. Walburg Academy – 1925-26
St. Benedict – 1926-27
St. Anthony – 1927; 1959-62
Holy Cross – 1928-36
St. Henry – 1936-59; 1962-70

Sr. Placida throughout her religious life, and probably before that, would be known as a “character.” She had a sense of humor which sometimes touched upon practical jokes; she had strong likes and dislikes-and most of us knew what they were. The roll of her eyes and the laugh that followed told it all. Each of us will have her own memories.

Gradually weakening over these last months, Sr. Placida died peacefully at the age of 98 on Wednesday, December 11, 1991.

Vigil Service-St. Walburg Monastery chapel on Friday, December 13, at 7:00 PM.

Mass of Christian Burial at 9:30 AM on Saturday, December 14, 1991.

Interment at St. Walburg Monastery, Villa Hills, KY.
