Few readers of this blog experience hunger unless self-imposed for various reasons. Today’s statistics report that 1 in 11, or 770 million people suffer chronic hunger. The United Nations in 2015 set as a Sustainable Development Goal to achieve zero hunger by 2030.
It is a known fact that enough food is produced to feed every person on the globe.
If lack of food production is not the cause of hunger, what is? The main causes of hunger have been identified as conflict, climate and economic inequality, all of which call for action by national and international leadership.
While leadership is key toward any sustainable solution, we as people of faith are not free of responsibility. Catholic social teachings affirm the right of every person to have what is necessary to sustain life, and we, people of faith, have a moral responsibility to ensure that their basic needs are being met.
Every action, no matter how small, makes a difference in fulfilling our responsibility. What action might each one take to meet the growing need of our sisters and brothers in Christ?
