“Earth: Our Common Home” by Rita Brink, OSB

The United Nations are  currently gathered in Brazil discussing climate changes and its impact on planet earth, home to over 8.2 billion people.

The effects of climate change are having devastating impacts on the lives of hundreds of millions of peoples, causing whole nations to lose their homeland due to rising temperatures, melting glaciers, severe drought, powerful hurricanes, torrential rains, and increased flooding.

If temperatures continue to rise at the present rate, planet earth will experience catastrophic consequences affecting all life. The United Nations, with over two hundred countries in attendance, holds the responsibility for working together to regain control of contributing factors, mainly the emission of greenhouse gases  trapping heat in the atmosphere.

While the nations do their part in caring for planet earth, the Church celebrates the 10th anniversary of its document, Laudato Si’, “Care for Our Common Home” authored under the pen of Pope Francis. Laudato Si’ is a document calling each of us to our  responsibility of caring for all creation.

Our common home, planet earth, with all its riches, beauty, and welcoming invitation for life is our gift. Our care in return shows our appreciation and grateful thanks. As individuals, families, neighborhoods, small towns or larger cities, what part will we play in caring for the earth? Every effort small or large makes a difference.
