“Lent: A Forty-Day Reset for the Soul” by Sr. Aileen Bankemper

My turn for writing the community’s blog often comes when Lent is about to begin. This year is no exception. The word Lent means springtime, and refers to the lengthening of daylight. Following the harsh weather that we recently experienced, I imagine most of us will be especially delighted to see spring appear!

Judith Sutera describes Lent as “an opportunity for a reset. A time to turn back and take a more serious and intentional look at one’s frailty.” Knowing one’s physical frailty is easier than knowing one’s spiritual frailty. Our American culture is known for its busyness and many involvements that can lead us to ignore our spiritual health. The forty days of Lent offers us ample opportunity to take a longer and deeper view into the frailty and health of our relationships – with God, self, others and creation. The Church calls us to the three practices of Lent – prayer, fasting, good works. When we fully allow ourselves to participate in these practices, growth happens, our spiritual life gains vitality and most importantly, love blooms. Happy Lenting!
