“Unless someone like you cares a whole lot,
nothing is going to get better.
It’s not.”
Dr. Seuss
Recall a time when another reached out offering a caring word of encouragement, gratitude, sympathy, or a smile with a kind word. What feeling did it invoke?
We live in a time of unrest, experiencing wars around the world, political upheaval in our own back yard, the effects of rapid climate change, and daily, sometimes hourly, reports of people being treated with little dignity.
If we expect change we need to act. We cannot take on all the world’s problems, yet we can act on behalf of a situation we are willing to embrace. I have recently called myself to be better informed about the current situations of immigration and the lack of dignity being extended to men, and children seeking a life from dire economic, social and political circumstance for themselves and their family.
The words of Dr, Seuss, “Unless someone like you cares a whole lot, nothing is going to get better. It’s not,” echo our call as followers of Jesus to respect and value all life and above all to support one another.
Besides getting better informed about Catholic Social Teachings, US Immigration Laws, various publications of the US Bishops, and today’s reality, I have called myself to write to members of the US Congress in support of needed revisions in US immigration laws and procedures. Revisions that reflect a more welcoming and just path to citizenship.
To what issue and action might you call yourself?
