DECEMBER PRAYER OF THE DAY

1.                Saturday of the 34th Week in Ordinary Time

Majestic and mysterious are you, O God our Creator. You bestow all manner of good gifts upon us and through Jesus Christ you destroy sin and death. May everything we do today give you praise as we work to extend your reign here on earth. We pray in name of Jesus Christ who abides with you and the Holy Spirit, now and forever.

2.                    First Sunday of Advent

God of all longing, stir up in our hearts eager anticipation for the coming of our Savior Jesus Christ. In this season of darkness and waiting, be our light and our hope. When he comes, may Christ find us steadfast in the Holy Spirit, giving praise to you. This we pray through Jesus Christ whose coming is certain, now and forever.

3.                    Francis Xavier, Priest, Religious, Missionary

O God, you splendor radiates from East to West upon all the nations of the world. Through the work and preaching of Francis Xavier, you drew many people to yourself. Enkindle in us his zeal for the gospel and his desire to follow your call wherever it may lead us. We pray in the name of Jesus Christ, who abides with you and the Holy Spirit, now and forever.

4                    Tuesday of the first Week of Advent

Blessed are you, God of justice and peace. Deliver us from the works of darkness and transform us into a people of light. Through the Holy Spirit, teach us to judge wisely, to live humbly and to wait patiently for the coming of your saving power in our lives. 5.                    Wednesday of the First Week of Advent
God of mercy and compassion, relying on your promise of salvation, we wait for Christ's coming among us. When he comes, may he find us living in hope, faithful in prayer and ready to welcome him through the grace of the Holy Spirit. 6.                      Thursday of the First Week of Advent

Most High God, in this season you call us to be still and know that you are God. May our patient prayer and waiting be acceptable to you. Through the grace of the Holy Spirit, prepare our hearts to welcome the Savior. This we pray through Jesus Christ whose coming is certain, now and forever.

7.                    Ambrose, Bishop, Doctor of the Church

O God, Source of wisdom and understanding, through your grace Ambrose became a great teacher of the Christian faith. Raise up in your Church talented men and women to help us grow in holiness and faith. We pray in the name of Jesus Christ, who abides with you and the Holy Spirit, now and forever.

8.                    Immaculate Conception of the Virgin Mary

Eternal God, in the Immaculate Conception of the Virgin Mary you reveal your steadfast love and your plan of salvation for us. We praise you for Mary, freed from original sin and redeemed by the merits of her Son Jesus Christ. Keep your Church free of sin and teach us to rejoice in the new life of Christ that grows within us. We pray in the name of Jesus Christ, who abides with you and the Holy Spirit, now and forever.

9.                        Second Sunday of Advent

God of the ages, you sent the prophets as your messengers to preach repentance and prepare the way for our salvation. Give us the grace to hear their cry and to forsake the paths of darkness. Through the grace of the Holy Spirit, may we greet Jesus Christ our Redeemer with joy. This we pray through Jesus Christ whose coming is certain, now and forever.

10.                       Monday of the Second Week in Advent

Uphold us, O God. You have been our hope from our mother's womb. In this expectant time guide our steps through the grace of the Holy Spirit. Rescue us from the darkness of sin and lead us into the light of your glory where we will see the face of Jesus our Savior, shining and radiant. 11.                        Tuesday of the Second Week in Advent

God of winter's stillness, awaken your people to the coming of a new heaven and new earth. May the valleys of our sinful lives be filled with your grace. Through the grace of the Holy Spirit, brighten our steps and lead us in the ways of peace. This we pray through Jesus Christ whose coming is certain, now and forever.

12.                        Our Lady of Gadulape

O God, defender of the poor and refuge for the oppressed, at Guadalupe you blessed the Americas with a sign of hope, the presence of Mary, Virgin and Mother. Through her intercession, pour upon us the liberating grace won for us by Jesus Christ. Instill in our hearts love and compassion for all your people and make justice spring up in the midst of the nations. 13.                        Lucy, Virgin, Martyr

God of loving power and strength, you made Lucy resolute in the face and death, and she won the crown of martyrdom. Grant us the courage to hold fast in times of trial and temptation and let us share in the happiness of eternal life. 14.                        John of the Cross, Priest, Religious, Doctor of the Church

Holy and gracious God, you called John of the Cross to know you in the darkness of suffering and prayer. Open our eyes to your presence in our darkness. May we come to grasp the all surpassing love and knowledge of Jesus Christ and, like John, be drawn ever closer to you. Merciful and gracious God, each new day casts your light on all who await the fullness of redemption in Jesus Christ. 16.                        Third Sunday in Advent

O God, you promised sight to the blind, freedom to the captive and justice to the oppressed. Through the grace of the Holy Spirit, make us messengers of the glad tidings of your salvation. 17.                        Monday of the Third Week in Advent

We praise you, God of creation and redemption, for your divine plan of salvation extends through all time. In the tenderness and power of the Holy Spirit, you bring us to the celebration of the mystery of your Word made flesh. Illumine our minds and hearts that we may see how near Christ is to us. This we pray through Jesus Christ whose coming is certain, now and forever.

18.                        Tuesday of the Third Week in Advent

God of the covenant, you revealed yourself to Moses in the burning bush and in the law at Sinai. Fill us with hope as we wait for the coming of our Savior and the revelation of your saving power. Through the power of the Holy Spirit, free us from bondage to evil and deliver those held captive by sin. This we pray through Jesus Christ whose coming is certain, now and forever

19.                        Wednesday of the Third Week in Advent

Loving and merciful God, we praise you for our deliverance is close at hand. We look forward to the coming of Christ who will restore justice and peace to our world. Through the power of the Holy Spirit, cleanse our hearts of pride so that we may celebrate the birth of our Savior with humble joy. 20.                            Thursday of the Third Week in Advent

God of infinite love, we eagerly await the coming of the Messiah, promised of old, foretold by the prophets and anticipated by the birth of John the Baptist. May we follow the example of Mary who gave herself to your will. Through the grace of the Holy Spirit, fill us with unwavering faith and quicken your life within us. 21.                            Friday of the Third Week in Advent

O God of radiant light, the darkness of sin casts a winter shadow on our lives and we fear the lasting barrenness of separation from you. Send the Sun of Justice to blaze upon this earth and draw us into the warmth of your love. Through the grace of the Holy Spirit, fill us with the vibrancy of those who know their hope is sure. 22.                            Saturday of the Third Week in Advent

Tender and gentle God, you formed us in your divine image and in Jesus Christ you restore that image shattered by sin. As we wait in patient hope for the coming of our Savior, prepare us to be more receptive to your will. Through the grace of the Holy Spirit, deepen our understanding of the mystery of the Incarnation and open our hearts to the joys of salvation. 23.                            Fourth Sunday in Advent

God-with-us, your Church is filled with wonder at the nearness of your presence. We anticipate the birth of our Savior come among us to gather all in your peace. Through the power of the Holy Spirit, may we who celebrate the mystery of God made flesh come to share in the divinity of Christ. 24.                            Monday of the Fourth Week in Advent

O loving Creator and saving Redeemer, we praise your name in eagerness and anticipation. Today our blessed hope, the wonderful coming of Christ, is near. Today our redemption is at hand. Through the power of the Holy Spirit, fill the outstretched hands of those who long for the dawn of justice. This we pray through Jesus Christ whose coming is certain, now and forever.

25.                            The Nativity of the Lord

We give you glory, God of light, as we celebrate this feast of our salvation. Today the Sun of Justice is risen on our world; Christ our Savior is born. Fill our minds and hearts with the wonder of your tender love for us. Bring to completion the vision of peace you hold for our world. 26.                            Stephen, First Martyr

O God of martyrs, all the ends of the earth have seen your saving power. We give you thanks for the example of Stephen who was the first disciple to suffer and die for the faith. Make us confident in our faith and firm in our witness to the Gospel. We pray in the name of Jesus Christ Word made flesh through the power of the Holy Spirit, now and forever.

27.                            John, Apostle, Evangelist

O Eternal Life that became visible to us, the beloved disciple John beheld your glory revealed in Jesus Christ and testified to all that he had seen and heard. Through the intercession of your apostle and evangelist, lead your Church to a deeper understanding of Christ's presence in our midst. We pray in the name of Jesus Christ Word made flesh through the power of the Holy Spirit, now and forever.

28,                            Holy Innocents, Martyrs

God of mystery, you show your power through the weak, your glory through the unnamed, your justice through the suffering. In our celebration of the victory of the Holy Innocents we profess Jesus Christ, the Lamb who was slain, as our Savior and hope of everlasting life. Strengthen our faith that we may bear our share of suffering and come at last to union with you. We pray in the name of Jesus Christ Word made flesh through the power of the Holy Spirit, now and forever.

29.                            Fifth Day in the Octave of Christmas

We praise you, God of saving power, for Jesus Christ, a light dawning for the just, the joy of the upright of heart. In Christ we see your love for us made visible. As we celebrate the mystery of his birth, may we recognize him in the lives of the poor and needy and learn to live justly and simply from their example. We pray in the name of Jesus Christ Word made flesh through the power of the Holy Spirit, now and forever.

30.                            Holy Family

God of joy and harmony, we praise you for Jesus Christ, Word made flesh dwelling in our midst. In the Holy Family, we celebrate your love made visible. Nourish and sustain all members of our human family. May the peace of Christ order our world and may the fullness of his message live in our hearts. We pray through Jesus Christ in unity with you and the Holy Spirit, now and forever.

31.                            Seventh Day in the Octave of Christmas

God of our past and our future, in the birth of Jesus Christ you give us a vision of a world made new, cleansed of sin and shining with grace. As we approach the end of the old year and the beginning of the new, reveal your will to us. Lead us to our future, strong in hope and confident in your love.
