Villa Madonna Montessori

... a place where we strive to cultivate each child's own natural desire to learn. In order to achieve this goal the Montessori program is set up to help each child reach full potential in all areas of life.

Montessori Environment

  • program designed to prepare young children to enter first grade.
  • The fundamental tenet of Montessori is that a child learns best within a social environment that supports each individual's unique development.
  • The children's own activities lay the foundation for their continued growth. The intellectual bases for later academic accomplishments are created as the children independently plan and execute activities.
  • In learning to sort buttons, the three-year-old prepares for later activity at age five, sorting and categorizing vertebrate animals, a skill that will be used in math, science and language tasks.
  • Each child begins the Montessori program at his or her own starting point and continues at his or her individual rate.
  • Teachers observe and evaluate the child's development and plan for continued growth. They act as facilitators of learning and function as designers of the environment, resource persons, role models, and demonstrators.
  • Math and language skills are planned into the curriculum for three and four-year-olds, with more formal activities occurring at the five and six-year old levels.
  • Music, physical education, computer lessons, and art fill the remainder of each day with satisfying experiences that create confident, interested, and accomplished students.

    The Results

Montessori children are prepared to enter the first grade. They have learned to work independently and in groups. Since they have been encouraged to make decisions from an early age, these children are problem solvers who can make choices and manage their time well.

They have also been encouraged to exchange ideas and discuss their work freely with others. Their communication skills ease the way in new settings.
